Help! im so confusedd?

Okay, so my friend jill had a thing with brian for most of the year. then at the end of the school year they got in a fight and haven't really talked all summer. brian has started to talk to me(in a friendly way, nothing more) and keeps saying we should hang out. but i kind of get the feeling that he wants jill to get jealous of something. it's all really random and i dont know whats going on. should i go for it and see if i could actually be friends with him, or avoid any drama it might cause? by the way, she knows that brian and i are talking as friends, and she says she doesnt care if we hang out...but idk
